JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the general supervision of the Warden, Deputy Warden, Lieutenant and direct supervision of the Kitchen Supervisor, the cook shall be responsible for duties associated with, but not limited to, the operations of Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail kitchen. Such duties include actual provisions of a full food service program for all offenders; preparation, serving, maintaining health regulations according to State and Local requirements.   Employee may be subject to serious physical violence during everyday job duties. Excellent attendance is required for this position.



QUALIFICATIONS: Applicant for the position must be experienced and knowledgeable in food preparation for large groups of people, and food sanitation as described by the Health Department. Must have excellent communication skills, to include verbal communications, ability to explicitly explain work instructions to jail inmates assigned to the kitchen in a respectful manner.  Ability to read and comprehend meal preparation instructions and calculate basic mathematical equations.  Applicant may be required to attend and complete Correction Officer Training and Unarmed Self Defense as required by the Ohio Minimum Jail Standards.  Applicant must be able to perform duties inside a high stress environment.   



ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES: Duties below are intended to depict tasks of this classification.

(95%) Supervise and monitor activities of inmates assigned to the kitchen. Prepare meals, and place orders, receives supplies, food and equipment for the kitchen. Maintain records, prepares reports and conducts inventories and maintains health regulations as assigned by Kitchen Supervisor.


(5%) Any other task that may be assigned.


Comment 1:

“The final applicant selected for this position will be required to submit to urinalysis immediately after appointment to test for illegal drug use. The jail will decline to extend a final offer of employment to any applicant with a verified positive test result. Also, an applicant with a positive test result will not be considered for any position with the jail for a period of two years. Any employee, testing positive for illegal drug use during random screening while employed with the jail will be terminated.''
